276) Zion with Nicole

I rolled into the Zion region under clouds beautifully lit by sunset (above).  Nicole later told me she enjoyed the same moments looking at double rainbow in the Zion Valley.  I went Zion to meet Nicole, whom I hadn't seen for years, and do some hiking and backpacking and camping.  I love seeing friends that I have not seen for a long time, and connecting again like we had just hung out yesterday.

Above and below Nicole walking through the steep narrow canyons of Zion.

The original plan was to day hike on the first day, and then do an overnight trip in the narrows.  Weather prohibited us from going into the narrows- several unpredictable isolated storms were hitting the area a day, so it wasn't worth the risk (to both my mom and Nicole, I am still yet to be fully convinced).

The first day we did some day hiking and then our plan b overnight trip was the stark opposite of the narrows- which was on the high, exposed and beautiful rim.  We missed the potential flash floods by staying on the rim, but we did not miss the storms.  The first day we got slammed by two sever storms.  The first threw down 3/4 inch hail and the second some good rain and plenty of lightning.  Lightning storms can be quite a thrill while in the comfort of a home, but it is a different kind of thrill when you are exposed on a trail with nowhere to go.  The above photos is of one of those many isolated storms that day.

The last day was a very pleasant hike down seeing nobody until we were almost out and into the popular trails Angels Landing.
